Welcome to WORD!
We are so excited about riding with you kids this term! You little shredder is about to be part of the coolest thing in town- WORD! It’s our biggest term yet with 280 kids!! For those of you that are new to WORD, you are just going to love it…
Here are a few details that will hopefully ease any concerns and also get your child pumped about riding!
Dates and locations
Kids must be ready to ride at 4.30pm, so we suggest arriving at 4.15. Due to the nature of heading off on the trails, groups will NOT be able to wait for late kids.
Check out the direct links below for all dates and locations. Please note that a couple session are at different locations. We do this to try new trails and mix it up for parents that are driving across town :)
Dates, locations & leads for Term 4 2019
Starting 21 October for 7 weeks
If your child is not able to attend a WORD session, just contact the Lead Instructor (phone numbers above). They are your main point of contact for all things going on on the day of your group as I am not at every session 🙂 We are not able to offer refunds or make up sessions at this time, so load up on the orange juice!
WORD instructors are passionate about instructing kids and stoked about riding. These adventurous professionals come from all around the world to ride bikes in Wellington. We are so happy to have these amazing people at WORD! You’ll be able to spot them with their Orange WORD shirts. Check out the profiles HERE. We are also super lucky to have some wonderful College WORD kids as Assistant Instructors (these assistant instructors will be teaming up with a WORD Instructor for various sessions throughout the term). Ratios are 1:6 or 2:8 (1:8 for the college groups)
Weather and Cancellations
WORD runs rain or shine (hopefully we’ll have more shine than rain!). But in the off chance that the weather is awful, we will cancel the session. Safety is a huge concern for us, and we don’t want anyone to be put in harm’s way for the sake of a ride. We will post on the WORD Facebook page at noon on the day of your session if we are canceling. This page is an open page, so you do not need to be on Facebook to view. In the event that we do cancel a session, we will look at adding on another session at the end to make up for it 🙂
What to bring
Mountain bike with 2 working brakes **we suggest getting it serviced before you come at your friendly bike shop.
Small backpack with the following:
Snacks (a banana, cheese and crackers, scroggin or an apple make a great snack)
Inner tube to fit your tire
Kids will need to be able to carry their own gear- we want kids to be independent mountain bikers (and humans), so having them be responsible for their own items is one way to promote their independence.
For the 13-17 year olds…We cannot guarantee at vehicle will be available for kids to drop there stuff in. Most instructors ride to the session, so kids need to be self sufficient.
How WORD sessions work
WORD is all about encouraging kids to enjoy the trails, just as much as we do. We strive to build confidence (on and off the bike), encourage new friendships, and foster a life long love of mountain biking. Each week we split into groups (see below) and go for a trail ride. Most weeks will have a specific skill that we will focus on (ie. corners), but it will be tailored to the ability of the smaller groups. For example, the newbies group might be learning how to balance around a corner on Lazy Fern, while the more experienced riders are learning speed around berms. Once a term, we will do a bit of trail maintenance. Bike maintenance skills are added in when the situation arises 🙂
We always split into groups based on 3 things: skill ability, fitness ability, preference. At the 1st session, we’ll split into our smaller groups based on ability/fitness, and will stick with those mini groups through the term. If a WORD kid ‘outgrows’ the group, the instructor will ensure the kid is moved into the correct group. Some groups will have the pleasure of having 2 instructors (lead and assistant instructor).
Parents and riding
We love that you love riding bikes too! And although we know some of you are keen to ride with your kids during a WORD session, we would prefer that you do your own thing instead. Think of it like soccer- you wouldn’t run on the field playing with your kid at practice 🙂 So go on and enjoy the 2 hours… there are heaps other parents that are also keen on an adult ride!
Heaps of WORD parents are keen to carpool! We have popped up a CARPOOLING post on the WORD facebook page, head over there to coordinate with other families. On the first day of the term, there will be an opportunity to connect with other parents to organise carpooling for future WORD sessions.
From time to time, your child might fall off their bike and be injured, but we make every effort to see that they are not put in a situation that is overtly dangerous. Kids are encouraged to ride at their own pace, and progressions are made slowly. We start small, and build up. We look at obstacles (ie. a corner, a drop, a jump, etc), discuss line choice, and give options. Kids are encouraged to give things a go, but never forced. Walking is always an option 🙂 All WORD instructors will carry a first aid kit (and know how to use it), if a situation arises. We ask that your child comes with the items in the ‘what to bring section’ to ensure their comfort, safety, and fun levels are high 🙂
IXS/EVOC- deals for families!
We’re stoked to have Marleen Wholesalers on board this year with iXS helmets/kneepads/elbowpads and Evoc Backpacks! This gear has the latest technology in safety and looks crazy good too! Big ups to Flick!
Yay!!!! More kids biking! The WORD Scholarship Fund powered by Flick Electric Co aims to take away the financial barrier of participating in these fun after school programmes. 20 lucky kids will get to ride with WORD this term at our new Wainuiomata and Porirua programme all thanks to the good folks at Flick. They began Flick Electric Co to disrupt the status quo: by offering New Zealanders a fair and transparent way to purchase power through the wholesale electricity market, and doing good things along the way. And we couldn’t be happier.
T-Shirts and stickers!
Each WORD kid will get a FREE t-shirt and sticker. For 2019 we are rocking the blue and tan tops. We will have these on the first day of term. 1 shirt per child/year please.
We love sharing photos of our adventures on the WORD Facebook page and Instagram (@wordnz). If for some reason, you do not want your child’s photos to be used, please let us know on the first day at check it.
